Background

SBR is a multi-agency programme that will simplify the way business reports to government. Financial reporting is the first set of forms to be targeted by SBR, since these forms affect the broadest section of the business community.

Over the next three years SBR agencies will work closely with the software industry to develop products that will allow government forms to be pre-filled directly from business accounting/record-keeping software. To develop this technology, SBR will utilise eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) - a standard developed by the accounting sector for financial reporting, expressly to extract reporting information from accounts.

A similar initiative to Standard Business Reporting has been implemented in the Netherlands for financial reporting, utilising XBRL. Other countries are also considering similar approaches.
